What ingredients do I need to make caramelized onion dip?
Of course, onions are the star of this show. Deep caramelization is the key, but there are a few more ingredients that elevate this dip. I bet you have most of these already hanging around your kitchen!
Here is what you need:
- Light Butter (I like Earth Balance Whipped)
- 2-3 yellow onions (3 cups diced)
- kosher salt
- onion powder
- black pepper
- soy sauce
- 1/3 less fat cream cheese
- nonfat, plain greek yogurt
- light mayo
Simple! With the amount of flavor that this dip packs, you’ll be surprised that you need just these few, simple ingredients.
How long does it take to caramelize onions for the dip?
This is actually an easy recipe overall. All it requires is a little patience with the caramelization process. It take about 25 minutes to get those jammy, perfectly reduced onions.
The result is absolutely worth it. Your kitchen will be filled wit irresistible aromas, and the resulting dip is pretty mind blowing. Jeff put it best: “It’s addictively good. You keep telling yourself you’ll have one more bite, but then you have to have another.”
As the onions slowly cook, their sugars caramelize, creating a rich and savory flavor. Finally, the perfectly transformed onions are blended with creamy goodness, resulting in a dip that’s a symphony of flavors.
All together, with chopping the onions, cooking them, and mixing everything together, you’re looking at about 35-40 minutes.
I highly suggest that you make this the day before you want to serve it. It needs at least an hour in the refrigerator for all of the flavors to come together. And it gets better the longer it sits!
how to serve caramelized onion dip
There really is nothing like the combination of plain ol’ potato chips and onion dip. Since I’ve made efforts to lighten this dip up, you can definitely indulge in those chips! My favs are:
You could also include some cut up veggies, like carrots, celery, or bell pepper. Enjoy!

Caramelized Onion Dip
Ingredients
- 3 cups diced yellow onions about 2-3 medium onions
- 1 tbsp light butter like Earth Balance Whipped
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 4 ounces 1/3 less fat cream cheese
- 1 1/2 cups nonfat, plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup light mayo
Instructions
- Melt the butter with some cooking spray in a pan over medium heat.
- Add the onions, salt, pepper, and onion powder. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring often.
- Reduce the heat to medium low and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. The onions should be sweet and golden. Add soy sauce in the last minute of cooking and mix in. Remove onions from stove and let cool for a few minutes.
- Stir the cream cheese into the warm pan until mixed evenly with the onions.
- Stir in yogurt and mayo until everything is evenly mixed.
- Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for AT LEAST AN HOUR. The dip won't taste like much unless you give the onions and spices time to mingle with the creamy base. I suggest you make this recipe the day before you serve it!
